Real Patients, Real Stories: One Patient’s Gender-Affirming Journey (Part One)

At Restore Medical Center, we understand the importance of representation. When it comes to the joys and challenges that come along with gender-affirming healthcare, real stories from real patients matter.

We are proud to present this two-part interview with one of our very own patients. They generously shared their experience working with Dr. John Whitehead, Dr. Alain Ramirez, and the supportive team here at Restore Medical Center. Read on to learn about their personal story.

1. What was your journey like leading up to the decision to pursue gender-affirming surgery?

My journey toward gender-affirming surgery was a process that took years of thought and careful consideration. Initially, I had a somewhat idealized view of what the experience would be like, but as I learned more and saw others go through it, I began to understand the realities of the journey.

For years, I took my time reflecting on whether this was the right path for me. About three years ago, I started scheduling consultations with different doctors to explore my options. However, I didn’t feel entirely ready at that time. It wasn’t until I met Dr. Whitehead in Orlando that everything started to feel right.

Our conversation was the turning point. Dr. Whitehead emphasized the importance of being fully prepared, including addressing any health concerns beforehand. That level of care and concern reassured me—it made me feel like I was in good hands with someone who truly prioritized my well-being.

At that moment, I knew I was ready. I had finally found a provider I could trust, and I felt confident moving forward with my decision.

2. Were there any specific moments or experiences that solidified your decision to move forward with surgery?

One of the key moments that solidified my decision to move forward with surgery was the experience of working through the insurance process. Seeing everything come together—the approvals, the paperwork, and the coordination—gave me a sense of clarity and reassurance.

The team at Dr. Whitehead’s clinic, especially Michele, played a huge role in making sure everything was in place. There were some delays, particularly with my cardiology results, but once my insurance was officially approved, it all started to feel real.

At that point, I knew I was ready. I wasn’t just trusting the process—I was trusting the people who supported me and, most importantly, my own feelings. My provider reassured me that I was making the right decision, and that confirmation gave me the confidence to move forward.

3. What challenges or barriers did you face in accessing gender-affirming care, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I faced in accessing gender-affirming care was navigating the healthcare system in Florida. There were certain requirements I had to meet before I could proceed, and at times, it felt like the system itself created unnecessary obstacles.

I also encountered difficulties with finding the right medical provider. Not every practitioner was equipped or willing to provide the care I needed, which made the process even more frustrating. However, I stayed persistent and kept searching until I found the right doctor who truly understood my needs and supported me.

Advocating for myself and connecting with knowledgeable providers helped me overcome these barriers. Even though there are still challenges in accessing gender-affirming care, I know I’m not alone in this fight, and that gives me the strength to keep pushing forward.

4. How did you feel leading up to the surgery, and what was the day of the procedure like for you?

In the days leading up to my surgery, I was filled with a mix of emotions—excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. Two days before, I visited the clinic just to familiarize myself with the space and the people who would be taking care of me. As soon as I walked in, I was welcomed with warm smiles, and I immediately felt a sense of comfort.

Carlitos, one of the staff members, was especially kind. He made me feel so at ease, and in that moment, it really hit me—this was actually happening. We talked for about 45 minutes, and it felt less like a medical visit and more like catching up with a friend.

On the day of the procedure, as they prepped me and gave me the medication, I had this overwhelming feeling that I was about to experience something truly special. It wasn’t just about the surgery—it was about the support, care, and sense of family that surrounded me. That made all the difference.
